Isi-Uzo Council Chairman Enjoins Students To Be Diligent In Studies

Promises Bursary Awards to mitigate students' economic hardship

Chairman of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State, Barr. Obiora Obaegu, has called on Isi-Uzo students studying in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) and beyond to be serious with their studies as that is what will make them better citizens.

He gave the advise during the cultural festival organised by the National Association of Isi-Uzo students (NAIS), held on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Freedom Square, UNN.

Barr. Obaegu, who had served as Secretary of Isi-Uzo Local Government Council before taking the position of the chairman told the students to be serious with their studies because that would determine what they become tomorrow.

He said: “I know it is not easy to be a student as I was once a student and I am still a student because we keep learning every day, but be serious with it because it is a platform that will lead you to the government and your future. You are our ambassadors in UNN and other institutions, so know that what you are doing today will not only make you good citizens of Isi -Uzo and Nigeria, but will help you make more impacts in our society.

“Please, strengthen the call, continue being your brother’s keeper, continue to represent us well and continue to promote our culture. We will continue to support you in any way we can.”

Furthermore, the chairman who is also an alumnus of UNN thanked the organizers led by the NAIS president, UNN chapter, Stephen Ugwu. In his words: “UNN is an institution I am proud of. I am happy at what I saw and we are recognizing you in a special way. The government will continue to support you in all you do and thank you for promoting our culture.”

The chairman who received an award of honor at the event, for his support to the association, donated N500,000 and also promised to give bursary awards to Isi-Uzo students to mitigate their hardship in school.

In an interaction with our campus correspondent, the SUG president, Michael Abuchi, who is also from Izi-Uzo LGA, emphasised that culture defines one’s identity and urged the students to always identify with their people. In his words “before now, I have always encouraged students to engage in extracurricular activities like this one, because that is what defines whom you are, culture is your identity, any man without a culture does not have an identity. Always try to associate with your people, just ike I came here to meet my people. When you meet people, you meet connections, when you meet connections you become somebody in life.”

In an interview with the president of the National Association of Isi-Uzo Students-UNN Chapter, Stephen Ugwu, who doubles as the Special Adviser to the LG chairman on Students’ Affairs, described the event as a ground to showcase Isi-Uzo culture. According to Mr. Ugwu, “Some students were born and brought up somewhere else, so such people need to feel what Isi-Uzo culture is like.”

National Association of Isi-Uzo students is an association of Isi-Uzo students studying in institutions like Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Federal College of Education Eha-Amufu (FCEE), and ESUT among  other institutions.

Mr Stephen went on to urge every student to always “identify with their people every where and every time.”

Highlights of the event were, breaking of kola, local wrestling, cutting of roasted yam, cultural dance with different groups. Coronation of Igwe Chinemeze 1 of isi uzo (Onyedikachi Egbo) and Lolo Chiugo (Chiamaka Ugwu).

Other dignitaries that attended the event include Vice Chairman Of Isi-Uzo, Hon, Ogechukwu Nnamani, Barr. Secretary, Azubuike Odo, former PDP chairman, Isi-Uzo, Hon. Benjamin Ebe, leader of the legislative council, Hon. Irenus, Mr Gabriel Ugwu, Engr. Macdonald, and other representatives of wards in Isi-Uzo.

Also in attendance were National Union of Nkanu students, UNN Executives led by president Andrew Obinwani, NAIS executives from FCEE and IMT and other higher institutions.
