In a significant stride towards fostering inclusivity and equal access to education, the British High Commission in Nigeria has extended the prestigious Chevening scholarship for the 2024/2025 academic year to select Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs).

This initiative underscores the commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of higher education, aligning perfectly with international conventions.

The announcement was made by Ms. Gill Atkinson, Deputy Commissioner of the British High Commission in Nigeria, during a presentation held in Abuja.

The primary objective was to introduce PWDs to the Chevening Scholarship and guide them through the application process.

Atkinson emphasized that the Chevening program not only fosters cooperation between the UK and the Nigerian government, particularly in the education sector but also champions the inclusion of PWDs in society.

Atkinson highlighted Chevening’s inclusive approach towards PWDs, stating, “Chevening is designed not to discriminate against any particular group of people but to give them the opportunities to study, pursue their passions, and bring the skills and experiences they have developed back to Nigeria.”

She underscored the program’s overarching goal, which is to empower Nigeria’s brightest minds, equipping them to contribute significantly to the nation’s progress.

The inclusion of persons with disabilities in the Chevening Scholarship program reflects the UK government’s commitment to acknowledging the extraordinary abilities and potential contributions of PWDs to society.

Atkinson emphasized that PWDs possess unique talents and capabilities that should not be overlooked merely because of their disabilities. She stated, “Persons with disabilities cannot be left out because they also have a lot to impact on society.”

Mrs. Oluwafunmilayo Ladepo, the Chevening Programme Officer in Nigeria, echoed the sentiment that the inclusion of PWDs in the program is driven by the desire to harness their positive contributions to Nigeria.

She emphasized that this initiative is not solely based on their disabilities but on their undeniable abilities that have often been overshadowed.

Ladepo shared a success story from a previous Chevening scholar with a visual impairment who completed his master’s program and secured an internship with the BBC.

This achievement underscores the immense potential that PWDs possess and their capacity to excel in various fields, including journalism.

She noted that these scholars return to Nigeria equipped with valuable skills and experiences to contribute to the nation’s growth and development.
