9- Year Old Lion Kills OAU Staff

A tragic incident has struck Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as one of its staff members, Olabode Olawuyi, met his untimely demise at the hands of a 9-year-old lion within the institution’s zoological garden.

Olabode Olawuyi, a dedicated Veterinary Technologist who had overseen the Zoological garden for over ten years, fell victim to the lion’s attack while carrying out his duties of feeding the Lion.

Abiodun Olarewaju, the University’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the unfortunate event, stating that despite efforts from other staff members to rescue Olabode, the injuries inflicted by the wild animal proved fatal.

In response to the tragedy, the University’s management has extended condolences to the family of the deceased, with a delegation dispatched to offer support to his widow and children.

Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. This investigation aims to identify both the immediate and underlying factors contributing to the unfortunate loss of a valuable member of the University community.
