The United Kingdom has recently introduced a new comprehensive five-point plan aimed at redefining its approach to immigration.

Lead by the newly appointed Home Secretary, James Cleverly, the plan seeks to address various aspects of immigration, sparking a range of reactions.

Cleverly, emphasizing the need for a fair, legal, and sustainable immigration policy, unveiled the plan to Members of Parliament, declaring that “enough is enough.”

The plan encompasses significant changes, including restrictions on care workers relocating with their families and an elevation in the minimum salary requirements for skilled worker visas.

Recent setbacks, such as the Supreme Court’s rejection of the Rwanda deportation scheme, have fuelled discontent among Conservatives.

The Court deemed the proposal to send asylum seekers to Rwanda as illegal, preventing the UK from deporting those who entered the country unlawfully to Rwanda.

Amidst these developments, the UK witnessed a net migration of 745,000 individuals in the last year. The Office of National Statistics disclosed that the majority of arrivals, approximately 968,000, hail from non-EU countries, with the top five nationalities being Indian, Nigerian, Chinese, Pakistani, and Ukrainian.

Prime Business Africa delves into the UK’s five-point plan to curtail immigration:

Health and Care Visas:

A proposed measure aims to prevent the perceived abuse of health and care visas by prohibiting overseas care workers from bringing their dependents. Dependents, as defined by the government, include spouses, civil partners, and children under eighteen.

Skilled Worker Visa Minimum Salary Adjustment:

The minimum salary requirement for obtaining a skilled worker visa, currently set at £26,000, has undergone a significant increase to £38,700, representing a 50% surge.

Shortage Occupation List Changes:

The Shortage Occupation List, featuring jobs deemed challenging to fill for UK residents, is set for revision. The new policy eliminates the 20% minimum wage reduction previously offered to those applying for visas in shortage occupations.

Family Visas:

In a bid to ensure financial stability, the minimum requirement for family visas will be elevated to £38,700, a substantial increase from the 2012 rate of £18,600.

Student Visas:

Cleverly anticipates a reduction of around 300,000 in future immigration figures, driven by changes to student dependents and an ongoing review of the graduate route by the Migration Advisory Committee.
