There were some great songs in 2021 particularly in the hip hop genre. There were many highs and few lows in the music industry in the outgoing year.

Prime Business Africa’s IZUCHUKWU OKOSI in this piece runs the rule on the most played songs in the latter part of the year 2021 on our airwaves.

1. Mood – Wizkid

Nigeria’s star boy Wizkid released his latest single named “Mood,” which features sensational Nigerian artist, Buju.

The new song “Mood” is from his latest album, “Made in Lagos Deluxe Album which actually was released in 2020.

This is however about the most played songs in the latter part of 2021, a demonstration of the quality that this work oozes.

2. Lie – Kizz Daniel

Kizz Daniel’s songs are always delights to listen and watch. The track Lie was definitely one of the most played songs of the year 2021 since it was released.

At parties, clubs, on radio and television and at live shows, Lie swept everybody off their feets.

The video much like that of his previous work, One Ticket, which would have made the cut if this piece was written for 2020 hit songs shows different shades of the Avatar (a young beautiful lady) whom Kizz would not lie to.

On one side, we see her and Kizz in lovedup positions a d in great spirits and and then we see them trading blames in heated arguments. The directorial job was very creative and its beat was danceable.

3. Essence (Remix) – Wizkid, featuring Tems & Justin Bieber:

This remix song deservedly claimed a Grammy award.

Featuring fast rising sensation Tems and the US star Justin Biebar, it topped charts abroad and was also fans’ favourite back home which was from the box of his fourth studio album.

This was widely played on radio and television as well as at clubs etc. and has inadvertently opened up more opportunities for collaborations not just for Wiz big (Wizkid) but for Tems whose talent is massive!

4. Free Mind – Omah Lay

This song is a great Afro-fusion that is a sequel to the much talked about track Understand. Free Mind’s dance-hall nature is a favourite for the party goers.

The song does not speak overly about love gone soar but the need to take a retrospective view to life and why it is equally nice to take a breather and enjoy a bit.

Omah Lay has this proven his adaptability with this banger.

5. Peru – Fireboy

Even the government of Peru had to take some credit for the title and deservedly so. It’s ‘Peru’ after all.

Sang by Adedamola Adefolayan aka Fireboy DML and featuring Ed Sherman, Peru remix which Fireboy disclosed was recorded in his tipsy mood, recently displaced Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas’ to become No. 1 at the United Kingdom Apple Charts.

The role of Ed Sheeran in this masterpiece cannot be overemphasised. The German born British rapper made the song glow and virtually owned it like he was an Indigenous singer back home.

Worthy of special mentions include Arya Starr’s Bloody Harmattan, Rykado Banks’ Selection, Joe boy’s Abeg featuring Omah Lay and Mohbad’s Feel Good.
